Five Penelope Studies (2023) were adapted from the themes of my
chamber opera Penelope: Seven Ways to Wait. Each study explores a
particular piano technique: arpeggiato passages, scalic passages,
syncopation, chordal textures and legato playing, respectively. The
narrative themes range from the regal Penelope, wife of Greek hero
Odysseus, finding herself through her art (Studies 1 and 2), an exercise
video (Study 3), ‘witches’ (Study 5), and the real story of a young
Ukrainian woman’s persistent text messages to her father, a soldier,
which go unanswered (Study 4).
