SSATTBB and piano
Snowdrop is a musical ode to the resilient beauty of the first bloom of Spring. Embracing the snowdrop's symbolism of renewal and perseverance against the odds, this composition uplifts with its spirited melody. The second of two National Youth Choir commissions reacting to the theme ‘evolve’, Willow for
SSA and piano, Snowdrop stands as a testament to the power of resilience.
Text:
In springtime I'm first to grow,
Amid the thawing snow,
After winter I'm first to evolve,
I glow with a mighty resolve.
I seem shy as if I’m scared to be seen
The first flower where winter has been.
But I’m really the boldest plant
I bloom when others can’t!
I am the Snowdrop,
I touch ice and hear it pop.
With petals white I make snow stop.
My store of power
Is not measured by my little size.
I may be small but my will is strong.
When you see me lift up my head
I rise from my wintry bed
You’ll know the year has turned.
And the Spring has returned.
From a small bulb I push out my leaves
My buds do not deceive.
Every year I will call you again
To celebrate Spring’s reign.
What am I? What am I?
I am the Snowdrop,
I touch ice and hear it pop,
With petals white, I make snow stop.
My store of power
Is not measured by my little size.
I may be small but my will is strong.Poetry by Karen Hayes and Kristina Arakelyan
